MISSION
SAUSAC serves as a platform for collaboration between alumni of U.S. government-sponsored programs, the U.S. Diplomatic Mission in South Africa, and South African institutions and communities to:
- Create awareness among alumni of opportunities to build on their U.S.-sponsored program experience as well as personal and professional pursuits to strengthen the ties between the United States and South Africa.
- Spread the vast experience and capabilities of alumni of U.S.-sponsored programs into the communities where they live and work.
VISION
The vision of SAUSAC is to create and maintain a national hub for the network of South African alumni of U.S. government-sponsored programs so that they have an answer when they ask “what’s next?” after completing their program. We’re “next” and we want to build on the energy and momentum of our talented alumni members to make a difference in communities across South Africa.

These exchange programs promote awareness of sustained U.S. engagement in South Africa among alumni as well as an increased understanding of that engagement across the South African public who are potential participants of future U.S. programs. These exchange programs range from a fully-funded leadership development program to the United States of America to prestigious scholarship programs for master’s and doctoral students. These exchange programs have produced many prominent leaders across different industries in South Africa. TECHWOMEN EXCHANGE PROGRAMME
In 2019 I was accepted as a Techwomen Emerging Leader for a 5-week mentorship and exchange programme through the U.S. Department of State. I knew that it was an honour to have achieved a place, but I didn’t quite understand the impact it would have on my life until afterwards. Firstly, I was hosted for 4 weeks at Autodesk – it made me look at the future of the construction industry (which I’m part of) in whole new light. Coupled with the programmes run, and the network of ladies within our cohort, my horizons have expanded. I look at events now seeing opportunities and risks – I’m more entrepreneurial in my thought processes. – Samista Jugwanth
YALI COHORT 12 ,2018 – CIVIC LEADERSHIP TRACK
My experience of the YALI program was nothing short of amazing. I connected with amazing leaders that I still do some work with from time to time and was able to be exposed to what is happening in other part contrinees through the people I met. The highlight for me was the amazing inputs shared by a lecture from the Thabo Mbeki Leadership Institute. As a result of my exprince at YALI , I ended up publishing my first book on leadership a year later and went on to distribute over 1000 copies nationally. – Luphumlo Joka
